Grower Helps
At Hillside Nursery we remember the frustration of not knowing the ins and outs of growing and caring for our own outdoor living areas. We love to share our knowledge so you have success instead of set backs. However, Winston S. Churchill once said, "Success is not final; failure is not fatal: It is the courage to continue that counts." We have learned so much simply by trial and error and we would love to share our experience with you.

Plants
Hillside carries an amazing collection of annuals (plants planted yearly), perennials (plants returning each year), vegetable, tropical's, house plants and miniature garden plants each year. Home grown right at Hillside!
Not all plant are created equal. Hillside does not use growth regulators that can stunt the future growth nor do they use harmful chemicals. Many say that when Hillside Nursery plants are bought and planted they just "pop". Starting with a healthy plant ensures you'll get to enjoy your purchases.
Lighting
Proper lighting for all plants whether they are inside plants or outdoor plants is so important.
At Hillside we hope to educate in a way that will make you successful! Reading a tag is so important as it many times will tell just what the Doctor orders.
Full Sun Plants Like
6-8 hours of full sun per day and prefer the hot afternoon sun.
Part Sun Plants Like
4-6 hours of sun per day and prefer mostly morning sun.
Shade Plants Like
3-4 hours of morning sun only as foliage will burn with any more sun exposure then that.
Soil
Soils are essential for plant life, in the sense that they provide the medium for growth. Let's take a closer look.
Medium For Plant Growth
* Soil supports roots and keeps them upright for growth.
* Soil holds minerals and nutrients to adequately provide food for the plants.
* Soil provides air so roots can breathe.
* Soil holds water (moisture) so they can survive.
Our Hillside Premium Potting Mix can be found no where else and is hand mixed each spring to assure you the very best money can buy at a fair price. Many say they will never container garden without it.
We can help you correct soils around your home so your plants have a fair chance. Just bring Hillside Nursery a sample of your soil and they can then make a recommendation.
Water & Feed
Give a consistent and ample amount of water and feed. Consistent’ means you’re doing it on a regular basis and ‘ample’ means enough, which varies from plant to plant. We have many plant food options to so your plants succeed.
Make sure the water penetrates the soil as opposed to just putting a little bit on the surface.” Newer plants will need to be watered more frequently because their root systems aren’t completely developed.
As for the best time of day, we suggest early morning before it gets too warm so the plant can really soak up the water. If you water in the evening, your plants will be more prone to wilting, fungus and other diseases also.
